Entrepreneurial Exercise - Resume Building

>> Tuesday, June 1, 2010

When you own your own business, the weight of being an OWNER and not an EMPLOYEE can get daunting. Recently, I was asked to 'apply' for a job. Although I wasn't looking for work, I decided that it would be a fun exercise to build my resume again. The last time I can remember doing a resume, it was saved on a floppy disc. Pretty funny. So, out of the dregs of my business existence, I built my resume from scratch.

Here are some tips for what they are looking for these days:

  1. Include an image in your document.  A professional head shot is not hard to obtain and not terribly expensive.
  2. A clean layout that is easy to read with traditional fonts.
  3. A video of you performing your trade or showing off an example of 'how-to' is always nice.
  4. Be serious and respectful, but showing a sense of humor is good too.
  5. Make sure your resume is relevant and honest.  If you over sell yourself, you will find yourself miserable trying to figure out something you might not know.
  6. Don't downplay either.  If you are over qualified for the job, you might consider waiting until you find something closer to your skill set.
Here is the one I submitted.  I think it's fun.

brandITbandits.com 2006-present
Owner of brandITbandits.com. I formed brandITbandits.com in reaction to the average small business not having access to cutting edge marketing and branding. brandITbandits offers the average small business a high level of brand consciousness allowing their strategic advertising campaigns to work harder. Through Premier Bride Magazine, I had access to several small businesses that did not understand or know how to begin a ?campaign?. I took it upon myself to launch a company that catered to the development and growth of small businesses within the Wedding and Special Events industry. Currently, that strategy advises towards social media integration, website redesign, blog development and more. In Houston, I am considered an expert.
